Clinics

The 5th Department includes the subjects of clinical examination and diagnostics, medicine, surgery, anaesthesiology-intensive care, imaging diagnostics, obstetrics and reproduction pathophysiology of farm and companion animals. The department also includes a Pharmacy Unit.

Companion Animal Clinic

The Clinic serves educational, research and clinical goals on Medicine, Surgery, Reproduction, Anaesthesiology-Intensive Care and Imaging Diagnostics for companion animals, including equine and exotic animals.

The clinic is composed of the following specialty units:

  5. Equine Unit
  6. Imaging Diagnostics Unit

The Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care and Imaging Diagnostics Units also serve the clinical and educational purposes of the Farm Animal Clinic, in the relevant scientific fields.

Medicine Unit

According to the School Bulletin, the Medicine Unit educates the undergraduate students for the last 3 semesters of studies. It also participates in the clinical-practical education of the students of the 5th-8th semester. Since 1995, the Unit educates vets that would like to obtain further knowledge on Internal Medicine and Dermatology, mainly regarding companion animals.

The Unit works not only as an outpatient hospital during daytime, but also offers 24-hour hospitalization, almost all year round. Patients (dogs, cats, horses and small mammals) arrive from all over Greece. The services offered are of high quality, professionally and scientifically speaking. The Unit, among other equipment, also offers endoscopic and specialized dermatological examinations. The Unit is fully supported by the Diagnostic Laboratory, the Imaging Diagnostics Unit and the Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Unit.

According to the School Bulletin, the Obsetrics and Surgery Unit educate the undergraduate students during the last 2 semesters of studies. Furthermore, since 1995 trains vets that would like to obtain further knowledge on Surgery and Reproduction of mainly companion animals, on a yearly basis.

The Unit hospitalizes animals and offers medical services on surgical and obstetrician cases. Specifically, the clinic staff works on orthopedics, soft tissue surgery, obstetrics and reproduction disorders for companion animals.

The Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Unit educates the students of the School on anaesthesiology, analgesia and intensive care for farm, companion, exotic and wild animals. It also participates in the education of vets on these scientific fields, and organises several scientific events every year.

The Farm Animal Clinic serves educational, research and clinical needs on Medicine-Surgery and Obstetrics-Reproduction for the ruminants and monogastric farm animals.

The following Specialty Units function at the Clinic: Ruminants Unit, Monogastric Animals Unit and Avian Unit, for bird species used in production and farms. The Ruminants Unit includes the Medicine-Surgery Subunit and the Obstetrics-Reproduction Subunit. The Monogastric Animal Unit and the Unit of Other Production Animals include subunits that relate to specific subjects for each animal species.

Teaching is completed by lectures, stable activity and visits to farms. The greatest part of the students’ practice takes place at the newly built Farm Animal Clinic at Kolchiko-Lagadas. Also, the Clinic collaborates with farms and covers pathological and obstetrician incidents.
