DEPARTMENT 3

Infectious, Parasitic Diseases and Pathology

Microbiology and Infectious Diseases

  1. Development and application of molecular techniques for the detection, quantification, characterization and phylogeny of animal viruses. Pathogenesis, diagnosis and prevention of Bluetongue and papillomatosis in sheep. Molecular diagnosis of sheep and goat retroviruses, and avian adenoviruses. Detection and pathogenesis of scrapie in sheep and goats. Characterization of PrPSC, and genotyping of PrP in sheep and goats. Pathogenesis, diagnosis, prevention and management of infectious diseases in porcine (porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, pseudorabies, postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome, ileitis) and other productive animals. Immunopathogenesis of probiotic microorganisms in animals and their ability to assist immune system.
  2. Investigation upon the causative agents of matistis in ruminants. Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of Pasteurella multocida and Mannheimia haemolytica strains. Invetsigation upon the mycoplasmas pathogenicity Poultry Campylobacteriosis and Salmonellosis. Effect of probiotics on health parameters and performance of productive animals. Antibiotic resistance of indicator bacteria. Laboratory diagnosis of dermatophytosis in pets and productive animals

Parasitology and Parasitic diseases

  1. Protozoan and metazoan parasites of the animals and the human.
  2. Anthelmintic resistance in sheep and goat nematodes.
  3. Diagnosis of the parasitic diseases in the animals and the human.

Pathology

  1. Coronary artery disease, blood lipids and cholesterol: A link to Alzheimer’s disease?
  2. Telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) expression in canine mammary tissues: a specific marker for malignancy?
  3. The use of animal models to understand pathogenetic mechanisms of mucosal inflammation and cancer.
  4. The investigation of spontaneously occurring infectious and neoplastic diseases of domestic animals.
  5. Age-related changes in the brain of domestic animals.

Apiculture and Honey Bee Diseases

  1. Studies on honey bee (Apis mellifera) physiology, biology and ecology.
  2. Studies on microorganisms-parasites-fungi which affect/infect honey bees.
